How to See Art
Okay, let's admit it, we've all looked at a piece of artwork and thought "my kid could've made that." Contemporary artwork (and especially abstract contemporary artwork) sometimes lacks the mastery of and dedication to the perfect technique and realism we see in, for example, historical renaissance painting. But contemporary artwork is talked about as though its just as significant, just as meaningful, just as valuable as the old stuff. So... What gives?
If you've ever thought "I just don't get modern art," you're not alone.
And there's good news: you're not missing anything! You just might not have been taught to think about art the way you should have been.
I will not be teaching you art history in this course. I won't be teaching you to critique every artwork using a rubric, and I won't be trying to give you my personal eye or my personal taste. Instead, this course will gently introduce you to a new way of viewing artwork so you can develop your own.
